Ruthie "Pink Machine" Wright
Ruthie ‘Pink Machine’ Wright (Aged 37) is an athlete who ventured into the world
of mixed martial arts at the age of thirty five with a ‘bucket’ list of goals
that she wanted to achieve before reaching forty.
These included competing in a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition, competing as a boxer, a thai-
boxer, a chessboxer (more of that later!) and finally as an mma fighter. Seems like a tall order? Don’t bet against her! With a life time of resistance and cardio training already under her belt Ruthie was able to adapt quickly to the strenuous challenges her ‘wish list’ (also known as her ‘Pink Missions’) presented.
Fighting out of Project Mayhem MMA, to date Ruthie has won five medals for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, notably taking gold at the Seni before being awarded her blue belt in April 2010 under Black Belt Coach Raphael Dos Santos (GB Cornwall). She went on to win a silver medal in the NoGi British Open in 2011 in the blue belt category.
Ruthie boxed in October 2010, losing to a heavier more experienced opponent. She may have lost the decision, but she certainly won the respect of the crowd with her spirited display.
In November 2011 Ruthie went to Thailand where she trained full-time for two months at the Tiger Muay Thai camp in Phuket. Sadly her hopes of fighting there were dashed when her scheduled opponent was forced to withdraw through injury, leaving that particular mission on her ‘to do’ list.
On September 29th Ruthie will be ticking off another objective when she competes as a ‘chessboxer’ for the British flyweight title at the Scala in London. She will be competing again in the following month when chessboxing makes its debut at the Royal Albert Hall.
Chessboxing is a surreal sport in which rounds of chess and boxing are alternated until the winner is decided via checkmate or knockout.
Based on a cult comic book in which the hero is a ‘chessboxer’, chessboxing events are becoming
increasingly popular, and Ruthie is likely to make her debut before a sell
out crowd.
